MIAMI, OK — after stepping into Kurt Jackson’s Miami home during this season’s Holiday Home Tour, patrons left with a sense of nostalgia in their spirit.
Yes, there were stacks of homemade cookies shaped like Christmas trees decorated with red and green icing. but what made patrons do a double take was the entire home.
From the measuring spoons in the kitchen to the dining room table, the home’s furnishings were from the 1950s.
“I like to say my home is decorated in ‘early Grandma,’” Jackson said.
Jackson, 44, is the Pizza Hut manager of restaurants in Miami, Grove and Jay, Oklahoma, and in Baxter Springs and Columbus, Kan. when he isn’t working, he spends time transforming his 80-year-old white single-story house to a home from another time.
“Everything in my home is from the 1950s or older,” Jackson said. “Almost all are original pieces, while I do have some reproduction pieces.”
Jackson’s home is filled with antique dishes, couches, a refrigerator, televisions and radios. on a coffee table is an old TV Guide that has a photograph of President John and Jackie Kennedy gracing its cover.
The 1950s color palette in Jackson’s home is evident in the pale yellow telephone that hangs from a brown paneled wall. There is an icebox in another room, and another interesting item is a radio from an old motel where you have to insert a quarter to use it, he said.
“My favorite piece is my table, which belonged to my mom and dad when they were first married,” Jackson said, referring to the 100-year-old round oak pedestal table.
The only modern piece of furniture is 5-year-old television. That’s only because all the television signals are digital, he said.
During this year’s tour of elaborately decorated Miami homes, people packed Jackson’s house and stayed for hours admiring all the furnishings.
“They would point to something and say, ‘I remember Grandma having the same thing,’” Jackson said of the many antiques.
Keeping with his 1950s theme, the home is decorated with 10 silver aluminum Christmas trees outfitted with color wheels. Metal cars, trains and trucks sit underneath a Christmas tree looking as if they are waiting for a young boy dressed in Howdy Doody pajamas to play with them on Christmas morning.
Jackson said he finds most of his treasures in antique shops and flea markets in the Miami area or in his boyhood town of Marionville, Mo., which is about 90 miles northeast of Miami.
“Mom and I like to go on road trips,” Jackson said.
On their travels, they always make time to visit an out-of-the-way flea market, he said.
